Reddit used to be the place you ended up when Google sent you there for an honest answer. Now it is one of the first places Google and ChatGPT look. Search almost anything with "best" or "vs" in it and you will see Reddit threads near the top, with the AI answer above them often quoting those same threads word for word.

For a business, that changes what Reddit is. It is no longer a forum to avoid or a place to drop links. It is a channel that feeds both classic search and the AI tools built on top of it. We have been using it for a B2B software client, and the pattern is clear enough to write down.

Why Reddit shows up everywhere in Google and ChatGPT now

Two things happened. People got tired of thin, samey articles written for search engines and started adding "reddit" to their searches to get real opinions from real people. Google noticed and began ranking Reddit threads higher for exactly those queries. At the same time, the AI tools that learn from the open web treat Reddit as a large, trusted source of genuine human discussion, so they quote it often.

The result is that a single useful Reddit comment can show up in three places at once: the thread itself ranking on Google, the AI Overview summarising it, and ChatGPT mentioning it when someone asks. One piece of writing, three surfaces.

Forget the old idea of Reddit as a place to drop backlinks. Most links there are nofollow, and dropping them is the fastest way to get removed. The SEO value is different, and better.

When your brand comes up naturally in threads people are already searching for, you get in front of buyers at the exact moment they are comparing options. Those threads rank. Your name sits inside a result Google already trusts, next to an honest recommendation rather than an ad. For a B2B company, being the tool someone quietly recommends in a relevant subreddit is worth more than a dozen directory listings.

It also feeds the rest of your content marketing. The questions people actually ask on Reddit are a map of what to write about on your own site.

How Reddit gets your brand mentioned in AI answers

This is the newer, bigger reason to care. As we covered in how to show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews, these tools surface brands that are talked about across the web by real people. Reddit is one of the densest sources of exactly that.

If your product is genuinely useful and people mention it in the right threads, the AI has seen those mentions. Ask it for a recommendation in your category and you have a real chance of being named, because you were part of the conversation it learned from. No amount of on-site copy does that. Being present where people actually discuss the problem does.

How to use Reddit for B2B without getting banned

Reddit punishes marketing that looks like marketing, hard. The approach that works is slower, and it is the only one that lasts. This is roughly what a good comment looks like in practice:

An example Reddit thread: someone asks which tool to use for automated invoice reminders, and the top comment answers the question first with practical advice before briefly mentioning the commenter's own product and disclosing that they helped build it

Notice what that comment does. It answers the actual question first, gives away the useful part for free, mentions the product almost in passing, and admits the bias outright. Nobody reading it feels sold to, and the mention still lands.

Reddit's own guidance on self-promotion is blunt about this: if your reason for being there is only to promote yourself, you are doing it wrong. That is not a loophole to game, it is the rule that makes the channel work.

What we won't do on Reddit

Done properly, Reddit is one of the few channels that pays off in classic search, AI answers, and direct referrals at the same time. It just asks you to be genuinely useful first, which is why most companies never stick with it.
